Padmashalis are a Telugu speaking community with roots tracing back to Markandeya Maharishi. We are the third largest community and form 12% of the population of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Our community also has a large presence across India, including Maharashtra and Gujarat. Padmashalis are traditionally a weaving and artisan community but over time, many members from our community have successfully moved into modern professions. As a result, our community spread all over the world.

However, the Padmashali wedding rituals are not much different from other people in the Hindu community. They follow the common pre-wedding rituals like engagement, Haldi, and Mehndi where the brides and the grooms are supposed to exchange rings and apply haldi and mehndi respectively by the elders and other family members. However, haldi and mehndi are not just limited to the bride and the groom. In fact, the entire family members playfully become part of these pre-wedding rituals.

So, their pre-wedding rituals start from Mangalsutra, where the groom’s family typically presents a sacred thread to the bride as a welcome gesture to the family. Snathakam, KashiYatra, Arti, Ganesh, and Gauri puja are some of their other pre-wedding rituals. Meanwhile, the wedding rituals include Kanyadan, JeelakarraBellamu, MadhuParkam, Sumangali, Sthaalipakkam, GrahPravesh, reception, etc.
